40 million people enjoyed Sara Palin at her fiery speech at the RNC. It sounded familiar, if not in content and spirit. What was it? Now I remember. It was from the late eighties and the show was "Designing Women" produced by Linda Bloodworth-Thomas (a Friend of Bill's). That show was funny most of the time, until it took on a distinctly partisan tone, and we knew it was headed for retirement. Palin speech, was like the trademark of the show when some unwitting man, utter some sexist notion. Once the faux pas was exposed and we saw it coming and cheered the coming torrent. The of stream of invective in righteous indignation drew cheer from the audience. The audience was trained for the setup and punchline. In some ways it was very Pavlovian. The Passing of "Designing Women" in the end was an unpleasant attempt to mix conventional "I am woman hear me snore" & pro-abortion femism with humor. You get it, its not funny.
In designing "Designing Women" Linda Bloodworth-Thomas invented stylish and sexy women, who competant, mixing family and work and sassy to boot. Not oddly enough, it would be Republican and not Democratic women who'd resemble those designing women. Democratic women still cling to victimhood as their lot. Entreprenuerial energy is not among the traits one sees in the DNC. Essentially, in the Democratic party you have to be cautious and caution bring no real laughter.
What's the price of a political contribution? $2500. What the price of righteous indignation for sexist remarks by a democrats: priceless.
Thank you Linda for inspiring a new generation of women not encumbered by pantsuits.
